Midnight Train to Morphia

OK, strictly speaking, it should be 1.15 am taxi to hospital to plead for pain relief, but you know how writers like to riff and tinker. Such pain, oy! That darned loose liver again. Describe how it feels, they said. Is it shooting? Stabbing? Sharp? I nodded madly like a toy dog in the back of a newly-crashed car. Yes, all those and more. Does it hurt when you breathe in? Yes, which is why I'm communicating by nods - I can only speak on the outbreaths. But somehow they got the gist and soon I was being morphined into compliance and a feeling that I might possibly return to humanity. You need to move up to the next rung of the analgesic ladder, they said, giving me a slug of something else.

The Analgesic Ladder. Sounds like something angels use for a spot of heavenly DIY. I remember reading about it being invented by the Who. That can't be right, surely? Although with all that crashing and trashing kit at the end of a gig, who knows? Oh, that WHO ... The World Health Organisation. Makes slightly more morphine sense.

So mostly pain-free and with a prescription for stronger tablets, I headed back bedwards. A scary moment, nonetheless.

Oh Gawd Chrissie - for a fleeting moment I actually thought that no-blog-news was good news. I was indulging my imagination with images of you being far too busy to blog because you were sipping choc-Horlicks and window shopping in the Ye Olde Gifte Shoppe's of Scarborough. So sorry you were up to your eyes in such horrible pain, but really really pleased it is now under control. I'm thinking of you every day matey - lots and lots of love Gaily-Mae xxxx

Chrissie, the only imaginable benefit of severe injury or illness is free, legal Class A drugs on the NHS, so I hope they keep them coming when required. A riding instructor once told me, 'a bit of pain never hurt anybody,' I couldn't agree less. Thinking of you and hoping you stay as pain free as pharmacy can manage. Love, Valerie xxxx

Was listening to the Pogues on the way to work this morning and thought of you. Sorry to read the latest blog and hope the drugs are doing the trick. Just think of Shane and the preserving effect they've had on him! Good to see the more usual Chrissie style elsewhere. love Mark Rob

Chrissie, I stumbled across The Madolescents whilst browsing away on Amazon one day, looking for some new bathtime reading material. I finished reading the book about a week ago, and I thought I'd search you online just because I wanted to let you know how fab I thought it was.
I've grown up in Middlesbrough, but worked from Newcastle for a while, and I'm moving to Newcastle at the beginning of next month. So I'm from up your way!
After reading your blog aswell, I just thought I'd send my best wishes. Don't let the bastard grind you down! You're fabulous.
Love, Laura. xxx

Sitting here in the office at work looking down towards 'Fozzie Hall' and thought of you for a moment. Googled you to catch up with the news (and hoping of a new book release) but didn't get the news I'd hoped for. You're going through it at the moment aren't you? Just wanted to say that your books, especially The Madolescents has been so well read and will be for a long time. It left a big footprint in my life with loads of laughs along the way. Your sense of humour and postitive outlook should get you far. Take care, you know you're great!

hi Chrissie... A friend sent me this link to your blog after we started talking about how much we both loved The Madolescents - it was so refreshing to read a book set in the North East that wasn't grim.

Anyway, I'm now a regular reader of your blog and hope that sharing your story is helping you in some small way......

Hi Chrissiewissie this is Terrywerrykins yep thats me Husband number one. Well actually I think I was the only one brave enough to be your husband but as you know( since I visited you last week and brought you up to date with my life) there have been two other Mrs Glazebrooks since our time together. If words have failed your friends & bloggers what chance have I got of finding adequate words to bridge not only 20+years but the sad circumstances which have thrown us back together Through the efforts of Niece'y at least i've had chance to see you again & for us to have a few laughs as we toddled down memory lane together sat in the flat & the Harbour Bar. I was very suprised to find you had some regrets from the past as I have only good, albeit rather faint, memories of our time together.
Until this moment i've been a blogging virgin & i'm not entirely convinced this is going to get to you however i am totaly sure this is not my favourite means of communication (nor is email) especially as my typing skills sit somewhere between a 3year old child & a 90 year old leper with no digits left! I will leave you now (always presuming the technology has worked) & look forward to seeing you & Denise real soon up in Scarborough> Until then try not to fret (see I did read the complete contents of your blog) Keep taking the Horlicks/ analgesics & try to keep on the current rung of the ladder. Cusoon Love Terry G
